Azerbaijan officially unveiled the logo for the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) during a press conference in Baku on April 15th.

The logo, which is rich in cultural and environmental symbolism, features the buta – a traditional Azerbaijani pattern – as well as motifs depicting leaves and water droplets.

Narmin Jarchalova, Chairperson of the COP29 Operating Company and Chief Operating Officer, explained the deep symbolism of the logo design: “The logo reflects the diverse initiatives of the COP29 Presidency and is based on a synthesis of the buta, leaf and water drop symbols. Against the backdrop of the importance of natural resources, it recognizes Azerbaijan’s ecological vulnerability and rich cultural heritage.” She also elaborated on the significance of the design elements: “With its roots in Azerbaijan’s history and timeless cultural heritage, the buta motif stands for sustainability and innovation and forms a bridge between the past and the future. The combination of buta motifs stands for unity, and with the depiction of water drops, the buta motifs also represent five different elements – flora and fauna, air and wind, water, energy and the universe.”

Jarchalova added that in an era of growing climate challenges, the COP29 logo reflects the importance of seamless relationships between people and the environment, ecologically sensitive behavior and results-oriented action.

Azerbaijan will host COP29 in November 2024. The confirmation that Azerbaijan will host COP29 was made at the plenary session of COP28 on December 12th, 2023, after Baku received the collective support of the other Eastern European countries.
