Azerbaijan will host the COP29 world climate talks next year, ending a months-long standstill caused by the crisis in Ukraine.

The countries of the former Soviet bloc have unanimously agreed that COP29 will be organized in the capital Baku, Azerbaijani Environment Minister Mukhtar Babayev told delegates at COP28, which took place in Dubai.

It is important to note that the host country of the next summit should come from the Eastern European region. Armenia has withdrawn its candidacy in favor of Azerbaijan and has decided to hold the summit in Baku. Bulgaria has also withdrawn its candidacy in favor of Baku and expressed its support for Baku in connection with Russia’s declaration that it would not support the candidacy of an EU country.

Azerbaijan is actively participating in international efforts to combat climate change and has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent by 2030 and 40 percent by 2050 compared to 1990 levels. The country is demonstrating its potential in the field of green energy, especially after signing a strategic partnership agreement with Georgia, Romania and Hungary in this area in Bucharest in 2022. President Ilham Aliyev emphasizes the importance of synergies between natural gas and renewable energy and sees this combined approach as the key to the country’s energy future.

As part of these efforts, Azerbaijan has signed major agreements with the world’s leading companies in the field of alternative energy sources, aiming to generate up to 25 GW of renewable solar and wind energy.
