“We will double the amount of gas supplied from Azerbaijan to the European Union,” said EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, in a press statement after her meeting with Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, in Baku on 18th July.

The EU Commission President drew attention to the fact that the European Union had committed itself to taking more gas from Azerbaijan with the signed memorandum on the development of the Southern Gas Corridor: “This is already a very important supply route for the European Union. Every year, 8 billion cubic metres of natural gas are transported through it. We will increase this volume to 20 billion cubic metres within a few years. Next year, this volume will reach 12 billion cubic metres. We will thus make a significant contribution to Europe’s security of supply.”

The meeting also discussed issues related in particular to wind energy and green hydrogen energy: “With the Memorandum of Understanding signed today on a strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the European Union in the energy sector, we have laid a solid foundation for close cooperation in this field. In this way, Azerbaijan will gradually evolve from an oil and gas supplier to the European Union to a reliable supplier of renewable energy,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
